Review by KBK wealth connection:
Family and Money Matters: Life lessons for the new generation by Elaine King, is an easy-to-read book for older teens and young adults. Based on her experience talking and conducting workshops with high school students, King decided to write a book that talked directly to older adolescents about how to be financially responsible.
The book starts by stating a frightening statistic that only 1% of 12th graders understand personal finance. While I know this on some level, reading it in black and white is a startling reminder of the work that needs to be done in this country around financial literacy.
Chapters include “Families and Financial Literacy”, “You Are What You Are Taught”, “Managing Your Money”, and more. The book is a nice blend between a primer on money psychology and practical financial guidance. I think it would make a great gift for a student headed off to college or senior in high school that will be facing college next year.
Overall, King has done a nice job blending real life stories with her wealth of expertise in financial planning. If you have a child, niece or nephew, or just an important young adult in your life, it is worth picking up a copy of Family & Money Matters.
